People tend to create a picture of reality which is part based on their experiences and part on the way they would have like their experiences to be. Sometime a person may distort a memory, and repeat it enough times that he believes it to be true.
Perhaps memories are stories much like fiction based on truth, but somewhat embellished.
That would explain why in Jewish law, the court requires two witnesses rather than one, as our memories are subjective and inaccurate at best.
